Appeal

Greetings,

I have been volunteering at the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry (WAIM) since September.  I had decided to use my energies there because I’ve been impressed with things folks said about the organization. I want to tell you why WAIM deserves your support.

WAIM Director, Victoria Nimirowski, has said that the place runs like a Swiss clock, and I absolutely agree. Staffed with a mostly volunteer workforce, everything works together to provide quality, caring service to the community.

On entering, things look quite orderly, although there are many people in lines waiting to be assisted with their needs. From furnishing a new apartment to special clothes for a job interview, to a mom and baby looking for warm clothes, people are directed to the right place in the huge maze-like building! The variety of ways people are helped includes free clothing, furniture, household goods, heating and other emergency financial assistance – the list goes on and on.

Over 8,000 people each year receive some sort of help. These are our neighbors – the elderly gentleman who lives next door and the young mom who serves you a cup of coffee at your local breakfast place – families and individuals from the greater Windham area.

I have worked in the social service field for over 30 years, and have a variety of experiences working with people in need. One thing my experience has shown me is that everyone is entitled to respect. When someone enters WAIM, I’ve seen that they are treated with compassion and respected as an equal.

We all know times are tough. There are fewer jobs, and the prices of food and gasoline continue to soar.  It is challenging for many of us to make ends meet, even with able bodies and steady work.  Imagine the struggle of those less fortunate.

In this season of giving, there are many ways you can help – from giving your time, gently used donations or a financial contribution. I know that this year I will increase my monetary donation to WAIM. I hope you will be able to contribute generously, too.  I know that WAIM will put it to the best possible use.

With best wishes for a glorious holiday season,
