Adopt-a-Family Donor Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry’s Adopt-a-Family program. The goal of Adopt-a-Family is to match donors with families of limited means who may be experiencing crisis and are unable to provide something special for their children for the holidays. Recipient families are referred to WAIM by local social service agencies and Windham area schools.
The donor family or group provides an “adopted” family with gifts for children and their immediate family, including grandparents if living in their home.
As a donor you decide:
- The size of the family you wish to adopt;
- Whether or not you prefer to deliver gifts to the family or drop them off at WAIM;
- Whether or not to include a meal (gift card or food).
How much do you need to spend?
Adopt-a-Family is meant to show struggling families that they are not forgotten. We discourage going overboard with gifts, and recommend a gift amount of up to $50.00 per person. If you are adopting as a group and have raised more than that, please consider adopting two families and spread your generosity and good cheer even further!
We ask local agencies to refer families beginning in October, but no later than December 2. Unfortunately, some agencies do not begin making referrals until after Thanksgiving. WAIM does not have control over when the referrals come in, and we match donors and families as soon as we receive complete information from the referral source. This is a very busy time at WAIM. Caseworkers have logged up to 30 calls a day during the months of November and December, so we truly appreciate your patience.
Donor applications can be dropped off at WAIM. 866 Main St, Willimantic, Tuesday through Friday between 9:00am-12:00pm; mailed to P.O. Box 221, Willimantic CT 06226; or faxed to 456-9278.
Deadline for donor delivery to families is December 16th, 2011. If you are delivering to WAIM, Tuesday through Friday between 9am-12:00pm is the best time for drop-off. Please drop-off through the main entrance at 866 Main Street – NOT at the loading dock.
If you choose to provide a monetary donation instead of being matched with a family, you can drop off the donation at WAIM 866 Main St, Willimantic, Tuesday through Friday between 9:00am -12:00pm, or mail to WAIM AAF, P.O. Box 221, Willimantic CT 06226
